Trust & Safety
DirectOwner is built for high‑ticket owner‑to‑owner purchases. Our goal is to reduce fraud, increase transparency, and help buyers and sellers complete a private‑party sale with confidence.
Verified Owners
We prioritize listings from real owners. Phase 1 verification helps reduce fake listings and impersonation.
Clear Expectations
DirectOwner is a marketplace — not a dealer, broker, or lender. Buyers and sellers transact directly.
Safety First
Guidelines for meeting safely, inspections, and secure payment practices to reduce risk in private sales.
What we verify
- Identity check: basic verification to confirm the seller is a real person.
- Ownership signals: title/registration indicators, VIN info (where applicable), and listing consistency.
- Listing quality: photos, description detail, location clarity, and basic fraud screening.
Watch for these warning signs
- Requests to pay or communicate off‑platform immediately without viewing details.
- Seller/buyer pressure: “send a deposit now” or “someone else is paying in 1 hour.”
- Refusal to provide basic verification: title status, VIN (masked is fine), or additional photos.
- Overpayment or “refund the difference” scams.
- Unusual payment requests: gift cards, crypto, wire to unrelated party, or “shipping agent” stories.
Best practices
- Meet in a public place during daylight hours (police station lot or busy public area).
- Bring a friend and tell someone where you’re going.
- Verify ID (match name to title where appropriate).
- Test drive with a clear plan: route, time limit, and valid driver’s license + insurance.
- For RVs, schedule a walkthrough and verify appliances, slides, generator (if applicable), and maintenance records.
Before money changes hands
- Get an independent inspection (mechanic for cars; RV specialist for RVs).
- Confirm title status and lien situation. If there’s a lien, ensure the payoff process is documented.
- Ask for service records and verify VIN details.
Safer payment options
- Bank or credit union transaction (best for larger amounts).
- Cashier’s check verified at the issuing bank (don’t accept without verification).
- Escrow service (recommended for higher amounts; use reputable providers).

Does DirectOwner handle the transaction?
No. DirectOwner is a marketplace connecting private buyers and sellers. Transactions occur directly between the parties.
Do you guarantee a listing is legitimate?
We use verification steps and moderation to reduce fraud, but buyers and sellers should still complete inspections and verify documents before purchase.
Why does the seller verification matter?
High‑ticket items attract scammers. Basic verification reduces impersonation and helps buyers feel confident moving forward.
Is financing provided by DirectOwner?
No. We are not a lender. Financing options (if available) are provided by independent third‑party partners.
